For most students, an international internship is usually more of a dream  than an obtainable goal. Though numerous co-opt agreements, IEE is able to provide American students some of the best internships in the world. Our students are not given the usual ‘fetching coffee’ routine that usually comes with American-style internships. Our students are expected to join the Panamanian team, contribute to the projects, and develop their skills as a leader. In every internship that IEE offers, the student has the ability to have their name published through their host internship, something that is rarely achieved as an undergraduate. Currently, IEE offers to countries to volunteer in: Panama and Chile. Though each country has it’s own differences and uniqueness, both countries support high-quality, immersive programs that guarantee the student will advance their career skills and goals.

Panama

Panama City is a hub of globalization and as such a large number of global organizations are found in Panama. However, because of explosive growth in the country, organizations need all the international talent they can get and thus our partners love having US students intern for them. Students are able to offer their input and ideas on problems and developing the country and region – both socially and economically. All students have the opportunity to work on real issues and on developing research. Your responsibilities could range from UN country development reports to the revision of accounting standards for a major banking firm.

In Panama, our different internship programs are varied by organization and area of interest of the student. The programs we already have established are listed below. We are not limited to these organizations, however, and if you have a special areas of interest please let us know and we will work to fulfill your needs.

In the past some of our internships have been with:

  • United Nations Development Program – the UN’s organization for development.

  • Lombardi, Aguilar & Garcia – a law firm focused on international finance and banking.

Past students have truly enjoyed their internships experiences. Here are some examples of previous students projects at their internship:

  • At the Panama Business Accelerator, one student was charged with reviewing the business plans of four start-up firms, giving a presentation on each companies’ strengthens and weaknesses, and then helping the board of directors allocate $100,000 in investments.
  • At the United Nation’s Development Program, one student was asked to help create a matrix that judged the development index of Latin American countries as apart of a UN research report. He was then asked to give a presentation to UN staff from a different countries at a development conference. His name appeared on a official UN research paper and he was offered a UNDP job when he graduates.
  • At Lombardi, Aguilar & Garcia, one student was included in the process of reviewing the legal process for different companies that wanted to invest in Panama and Latin America. He had access to financial data and marketing reports, and he participated in numerous meetings with the partners and clients. He was rewarded for his hard work with his name appearing on a NYU Law publication in sponsorship from LAG.
  • At ePago, one student worked directly with the CFO, who is in charge of all operations in Latin America. He was tasked with reviewing and making recommendations on how to overhaul the entire company’s accounting practices. He never left the CFO’s side and received glowing praises and a strong recommendation from the CFO.

This past summer, we were able to have 100% of our students engage in “out-of-the-office” activities. This ranged from participating in a conference, going to dinner with a client, attending a business meeting at a different company, or site visits to Panama’s rural areas. We are very proud that our interns were not stuck in a office all day and were allowed to travel to other areas of Panama.

Chile

Our newest internship program is located in Chile. We offer a broad range of internships that range from sustainable development, to business and financial accounting, to NGO work and legal practice. Chile is one of the fastest growing countries in South America, and as such it searching for talent to fill its quickly expanding economy.
